Rowan, in Primary 5, has started a book club. Here is some information about it.

Why start a book club?

  • Because we love reading
  • Because we love chatting about books
  • Because we like to share books and recommend them to each other
  • Because we think that having time to read, maybe with something nice to eat and drink, is one of life’s real pleasures.

How will the club work?

  • We will meet on a Monday at lunchtime about once a month
  • We will have 8-12 members
  • A member will lose their place in the club if they miss 2 meetings without explaining.
  • If you haven’t read the book – don’t come to the meeting. If you miss 2 meetings – you lose your place
  • After each meeting, we can write notes or a book review on the book and put it on the school blog

How will we choose the books?
One member will make up a shortlist of three of their favourite books each month, and the club will vote to choose one. The person who made the list, will lead the discussion about their book.

DEC – Rowan
JAN – Hamish
FEB – Meg
MARCH – Calum S.
APRIL – Aurora
MAY – Owen

What do we need to bring to meetings?
I will bring cupcakes or tablet for us to eat while we chat. Could you please bring:

  • A copy of the book
  • A drink (fruit shoot or something hard to spill please)

Future events

  • 8-10th May 2010 – the Ullapool book festival will have a children’s author visiting – maybe we could plan a trip?
  • Author visit to the school – with a little bit of fundraising we could try to arrange for an author to come to the school and chat to us.

Next Meeting – Mon 14th Dec ,1pm – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (Rowan’s Choice)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Discussion points

Did you enjoy reading the book?
Did you like all the children who found golden tickets? If you didn’t like them – why not?
The chocolate factory is supposed to be a wondrous place. What are its most wondrous features? Of its many rooms, which is your favourite?
Which is your favourite sweet in the book?
If you could invent your own sweet, what would it be?
Four out of five of the children visiting the factory get punished for their misbehaviour. Do you think their punishment fits their crime? Do you like this about the book?
What message do you think Roald Dahl is trying to tell us about life in this book?

On friday 26th of June we did relaxation/yoga with Diane Robertson. It was arranged with the help of Jane Baines, Development Officer, Support for Learners. It was a fun and relaxing morning with Diane and Jane (Mrs MacDonald). We did exercises and stretches with them. It was excellent and funny and very relaxing.

Our topic these two months has been Send a Cow, Send a Cow is a chairty that helps
people in Africa. We had to try and read 12 books and get

sponsored by people like our mum, dad and granny. We had ladies from Send a Cow to talk to us about their work, and visitors from Malawi also came and talked to us about life there.

We raised £588.50. Thanks to all who sponsored us.

On Monday 20th of April Primary 4 were allowed on the pitch if you brought back the form giving your parent’s permission.

Before playtime Allan, the jannie, and Mrs Thomson, our teacher, took us out to the pitch to see where we were allowed to go. We had to go back in side because we had to get our snack.

The bell rang. We all ran out sIde onto the pitch.

We feel great and really excited.

On Tuesday the 21st of April we went to Dingwall leisure centre with p5 to have swimming lessons.  The good swimmers had to dive in and swim to the other side the pool.

The beginners went down the steps and some used floats. When we went back to the school we all felt tird and exited.
